Game 73 lineups: Nats vs. Phillies

They got through the opener of today’s doubleheader without incident, the skies remaining clear and the field dry throughout the Nationals’ 6-2 win over the Phillies. Now they’re hoping for similar good fortune in the nightcap of this day-night doubleheader. The forecast has steadily improved throughout the day, though there does remain a chance of rain later tonight.

Max-Scherzer-Finish-Red-Sidebar.jpgThe Nats are confident enough in the forecast to send Max Scherzer to the mound, broken nose, black eye and all. Talk about high drama. Who else would take the ball 24 hours after fouling a bunt off his face? “I feel like it only could happen to him,” Patrick Corbin joked. “He’s going to go out there, thrive on it and be ready to go.”

The Nationals do need to offer up some run support for Scherzer. They’ll finally take their hacks against Jake Arrieta, who was supposed to start Monday and Tuesday nights but kept getting the outing pushed back because of the rainouts.

From a bullpen standpoint, the Nats probably don’t have Tanner Rainey for tonight’s game after he threw 25 pitches in the opener. But they’ll have Sean Doolittle, who warmed up but wasn’t needed in the ninth inning.
