Lineups: Nats vs. Marlins in Jupiter

JUPITER, Fla. - The Nationals are back after a day off, and a whole bunch of regulars are making the short drive from West Palm Beach to face the Marlins. There is one notable exception, however: Max Scherzer, who will not make this start.

There’s nothing wrong with Scherzer. Davey Martinez gave him the option of making his regularly scheduled start or throwing a couple of bullpen sessions over multiple days instead and then rejoining the rotation the next time around. Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin did the same thing a couple weeks ago.

But Scherzer’s decision to skip this start does open the door for Ben Braymer, one of the organization’s top pitching prospects, to get a rare big league start this late in spring. Braymer, a 25-year-old lefty, made a big splash at Double-A Harrisburg last season (2.51 ERA, 0.975 WHIP in 13 starts) though he struggled after he was promoted to Triple-A Fresno (7.20 ERA, 1.933 WHIP in 13 starts). Then again, what pitcher didn’t struggle in the Pacific Coast League last season?
