Game 51 lineups: Nats at Marlins

OK, it’s time for the second of three doubleheaders the Nationals have scheduled in a five-day span. Slowly but surely, they’re getting through this rough stretch and approaching the finish line of a difficult season.

Scherzer-Delivers-Gray-at-NYM-Sidebar.jpgDavey Martinez decided to have Max Scherzer start this afternoon’s opener in Miami, thinking he can hopefully get six or even seven innings out of his ace and save his entire bullpen for the nightcap, in which Ben Braymer will start but several relievers will be needed. Scherzer, of course, needs to actually finish strong after his last start fell apart in the sixth with a pair of backbreaking homers to the Braves.

Don Mattingly also is starting one of his best in the opener: Sandy Alcantara. This is the first time this season the Nationals have seen the right-hander, who was among the large group of Marlins players who missed considerable time in August after testing positive for COVID-19. The Nats did beat Alcantara all three times they faced him last year, scoring 13 runs in 16 2/3 innings.
