Game 84 lineups: Nats at Padres (Fedde starting)

Davey Martinez promised roster moves (plural) after Monday night’s win, and the Nationals manager meant what he said. The Nats added two healthy pitchers to their staff today, activating both Erick Fedde and Kyle Finnegan off the 10-day injured list. And Fedde (surprise, surprise) will start tonight in San Diego.

Thumbnail image for Fedde-Slings-It-Gray-Sidebar.jpgThat was not expected, because as far as we know, Fedde has not faced any live hitters since going on the IL with an oblique strain two weeks ago. We’ll see if that means he’s limited in any way tonight, in terms of innings or total pitches. But even if he is, that’s a big boost for the Nationals, who have been making do with a patchwork pitching staff for a little while now.

Finnegan, too, will help a lot, offering Martinez another option in his bullpen. That group did yeoman’s work Monday with 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, the last four of which were perfect. But they could use a fresh arm to help out, and Finnegan (out since June 21 with a hamstring strain) should be able to help.

To make room for Fedde and Finnegan on the roster, the club optioned relievers Ryne Harper and Kyle Lobstein to Triple-A Rochester.

The lineup once again includes Alcides Escobar in the leadoff spot, the veteran infielder trying to stay hot after a 7-for-12 start to his Nationals tenure. And Josh Bell, who has been resurgent for two months now and homered off a left-hander Monday, gets the nod over slumping Ryan Zimmerman at first base and batting cleanup against Padres lefty Ryan Weathers.
