Breaking down the pitching staffs in the NL East

Super Bowl LI is in the books and that means pitchers and catchers will soon begin showing up in spring training.

Here's a look at pitching in the National League East:

Atlanta: The Braves are rebuilding their rotation by using experienced pitchers so that their prospects can develop without big-league pressure. ... RHP Julio Teheran, 25, an All-Star in two of his four seasons, will be the opening day starter, followed by RHPs R.A. Dickey, 42, and Bartolo Colon, 43. Dickey had a 4.46 ERA for the Blue Jays last season while Colon was at 3.43 for the Mets. ... LHP Jamie Garcia, who battled injuries playing for St. Louis, has a chance to be in the rotation while two of the top prospects - RHPs Matt Wisler and Mike Foltynewicz - will compete for a spot at the back of the rotation. ... Former Orioles RHP Jim Johnson will be the Braves' closer. He's saved 29 of 36 games in his two seasons in Atlanta.

Miami: The Marlins are dealing with the death of ace pitcher RHP Jose Fernandez, killed in a boating accident last fall. ... The rotation needs a rebound season from LHP Wei-Yin Chen, in a rotation that has LHP Adam Conley and RHPs Edinson Volquez and Tom Koehler. ... The rotation's fifth slot will be a competition between RHPs Jose Urena and Dan Straily, acquired from the Reds, and LHP Jeff Locke, acquired from the Pirates. ... RHP A.J. Ramos is the closer in a bullpen that's deep with power arms. The Marlins added RHPs Junichi Tazawa and Brad Ziegler to a bullpen that already has RHPs Kyle Barraclough, David Phelps and Dustin McGowan.

New York: The Mets have potential for the best rotation in the division, assuming heath, and that's a big assumption. ... The Mets are optimistic about the return of RHP Matt Harvey from thoracic outlet syndrome, but there's no guarantee he'll be the same dominating pitcher. ... RHP Jacob deGrom and LHP Steve Matz had elbow surgeries and are the least of the team's worries. ... RHP Zack Wheeler is struggling in his return from Tommy John surgery in March 2015. ... The only sure-fire pitcher in the rotation RHP Noah Syndergaard, who had 14 wins and a 2.60 ERA last season ... RHPs Seth Lugo (2.67 ERA in 2016) and Robert Gsellman (2.42) pitched well after late-season promotions from the minors leagues. ... The closer, RHP Jeurys Familia, with 94 saves in two seasons, and RHP Addison Reed, are the strengths in a bullpen that had the third-best ERA (3.51) in the league last season. Less work for Familia is manager Terry Collins' biggest challenge.

Philadelphia: The Phillies have a good crop of pitching - young and old - and they could be underrated going into the season. ... RHPs Jeremy Hellickson (3.71 ERA in 32 starts last season) and Clay Buchholz are the leaders. In 2016, Buchholz had a 5.91 ERA in the first half, 3.22 in the second. ... RHP Aaron Nola has the stuff to lead rotation, but he's still learning. He had a 2.65 ERA in first eight games, 9.82 in his final eight games. ... RHP Jerad Eichoff, who had a 3.65 ERA in 2016, is the most consistent of the young guys. ... RHP Vince Velesquez is growing and strikes out 10.4 batters per nine innings. ... The Phillies added depth to a bullpen that was one of the worst in the NL last season. They added RHPs Joaquin Benoit and Pat Neshek and LHP Dave Rollins. RHP Jeanmar Gomez saved 37 games last season, but he'll have to battle RHPs Hector Neris and Edubray Ramos for that role this spring.

Washington: On paper, the Nationals have the best rotation in the division, if not in the National League. RHP Max Scherzer, 32, won his second Cy Young Award in 2016 - he won the other with Detroit in 2013 - and led the NL in wins (20), innings (228 1/3), strikeouts (284) and WHIP (0.97), becoming the first pitcher since Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax did it in 1965. ... RHP Stephen Strasburg has a 3.01 and 10.6 strikeouts per nine innings for his career, but he'll have to prove this spring that he can stay healthy. He goes into spring training with questions about his elbow, although the Nationals believe he's going to be fine. ... RHP Tanner Roark, who had a 2.83 ERA last season, is the most underrated pitcher in the game. He was a starter in 2014, went to the bullpen in 2015 and flawlessly returned to the rotation last season. ... LHP Gio Gonzalez, 31, is durable and inexpensive for a starter, but after six consecutive seasons with an ERA of 3.79 or less, Gonzalez had his worst year in 2016, his ERA going to 4.57. ... RHP Joe Ross, 23, has yet to complete a full season, but he has poise and command. His 2016 season was cut short by injury. .... With RHPs Reynaldo Lopez and Lucas Giolito traded to the White Sox, the rotation depth starts with RHP A.J. Cole, who saw limited action with the Nationals last season. The team thinks that two prospects - RHPs Austin Voth and Eric Fedde - are ready for the big leagues. ... The Nationals also signed RHP Jeremy Guthrie for rotation insurance. ... The Nationals tried to keep RHP Mark Melancon, but he signed with San Francisco. They were competitive for RHP Kenley Jansen, who decided to stay with the Dodgers. That leaves RHP Shawn Kelley and Blake Treinen as the in-house candidates to be the closer. The favorite is Treinen, who throws a high-90s sinker and came into his own last year with a 2.28 ERA, 17 double plays forced and 51 hits allowed in 67 innings.
