A rundown of nicknames for Nationals players

I was reading my Twitter timeline during Saturday's "Improbable" documentary on the Nationals' run to a World Series ring and I saw a lot of mentions of Michael A. Taylor's play in the postseason and how important that has been over the years. Fans refer to Taylor as "MAT" because of his initials. It got me thinking what other players call Taylor for a nickname? Like "Mikey" or "Matty."

Checking some of the official nicknames from MLB.com, I have never heard other players call them by these monikers. A few of these nicknames are family-related and some seem like the players themselves were joking around.

Here is a look at the full names and nicknames for most of the current Nationals, according to MLB.com:

Michael A. Taylor: Miggy
Juan Jose Soto: Soto Pacheco
Maxwell M. Scherzer: Brown Eye
Welington Andres Castillo: Beef
Stephen James Strasburg: Stras
Ryan Wallace Zimmerman: Zim
Trea Vance Turner: T2
Eric Allyn Thames: Phone Home
Carter Alswinn Kieboom: (none listed)
Howie Joseph Kendrick: Truck
Sean Robert Doolittle: Obi-Sean
Patrick Alan Corbin: Corby
Starlin DeJesus Castro: All-Starlin
Victor Enrique Robles: Vic
Daniel Claiborne Hudson: Huddy
Adam Cory Eaton: Spanky
Kurt Kiyoshi Suzuki: Zuk
Ryne Richard Harper: Harp
William Taylor Harris: Clutch
Asdrúbal Jose Cabrera: Chiquitin
Yan Gomes: Gomer
Joseph Andrew Ross: JR
Wilmer Francisco Difo: El De
Aíibal Alejandro Sánchez: Alejo

Tanner Scott Rainey: Rainman
Roenis Elías: Cubiche

David Martinez: Tippy, Davey

Scherzer-Bears-Down-Gray-Sidebar.jpgSome of them seem like jokes, of course - like "Brown Eye" for Scherzer. No one is going to go around calling Thames "Phone Home," right? But "ET" makes sense. Does "T2" for Turner pay homage to the movie "Terminator"?

I have never seen "Soto Pacheco" as a nickname for Soto, it is more of a family name. But "Juanjo" has certainly been used before. I would like to go through the clubhouse when we are allowed in again to ask each player what he thinks of these nicknames.

* The Nationals are the first wild card team since the 2014 San Francisco Giants to win the World Series. They were also the first team from the National League to win the title since the 2016 Chicago Cubs. Yes, the Nats lost to those two teams in the postseason, but the Cubs loss was to the 2017 version. Four of the last six World Series have gone to seven games, including the 2019 win for the Nats over the Astros.

* The Nationals/Expos (1-0) franchise is one of five franchises that have a 1.000 winning percentage in the World Series. Joining them are the Blue Jays (2-0), Marlins (2-0), Angels (1-0) and Diamondbacks (1-0).
