Bringing the heat (updated)

We need it here. David Hernandez threw four fastballs to Mariners center fielder Franklin Gutierrez that were clocked at 94, 96, 94 and 96 mph. Gutierrez swung through the last one to end the first inning after plate umpire Rob Drake appeared to squeeze Hernandez on the previous pitch. Hernandez struck out Chone Figgins on a 92 mph fastball after retiring leadoff hitter Ichiro Suzuki on a bouncer to the mound. The first-pitch temperature was 45 degrees. A light rain is falling. The crowd could challenge the record-low at Camden Yards. Play ball. Corey Patterson is starting in left field tonight for Triple-A Norfolk. He struck out to lead off the first inning. Robert Andino is batting sixth, one spot ahead of Brandon Snyder. I don't think that's part of The Plan. Update: The Orioles decided to mix in a hit. Nick Markakis singled with one out in the bottom of the fourth and Miguel Tejada followed with a double. The offense was uncomfortably numb up to that point. The Mariners have one hit off David Hernandez, a double by Michael Saunders after the right-hander retired the first eight batters he faced. Hernandez has retired Ichiro Suzuki on two bouncers to the mound, the second on a changeup. He's struck out three, and his fastball is staying in the 94-96 mph range.
