Corbin helps own cause with RBI single (Nats fall 6-3 in 10)

Pittsburgh scored first against Nationals southpaw Patrick Corbin.

In the second, Josh Bell led off with a solo homer over the left-center field wall on 0-1 count. Corbin then struck out two and forced a groundout to end the inning.

The Nats quickly answered in the bottom of the second. Pirates starter Trevor Williams walked Ryan Zimmerman and Wilmer Difo. Corbin helped his own cause with an RBI single to left field to tie the game 1-1.

Corbin allowed a single to Erick González in the third inning. González stole second base. But he also struck out three in the inning to not allow a rally to get rolling.

Anthony Rendon slammed a solo shot in the bottom of the third, his fifth homer of the season. Rendon now has a nine-game extra base hitting streak. It is the longest extra base hit streak since Francisco Lindor enjoyed a nine-game extra base hit streak from May 1-9, 2018.

After three innings, the Nats lead the Pirates 2-1.

Update: Both teams were unable to add to their take in the next three innings. Corbin walked one but struck out three to get through six innings. Williams allowed Corbin's second single of the game but nothing else.

After six complete innings, the Nats lead the Pirates 2-1.

Update II: What a night for Corbin. He goes seven innings, allows one run on four hits, one walk and strikes out 11, with one wild pitch. He threw 106 pitches, 65 for strikes.

Update III: The eighth inning arrived and the Nats bullpen could not get the job done. Tony Sipp allowed two singles. Adam Eaton airmailed the throw in from right field on an Adam Frazier single, which allowed the runners to move up to second and third. That proved critical because Kyle Barraclough arrived and surrendered a two-run double to Starling Marte.

Mid-eighth, the Bucs lead the Nats 3-2.

Rendon does it again, hitting a solo homer to lead off the eighth off of reliever Keone Kela. He has six homers on the season and this is his fifth multi-homer game of his career. Game tied 3-3.

After eight innings, the Nats and the Pirates are tied 3-3.

Update IV: In the ninth, Sean Doolittle allowed a triple but struck out two to keep the game tied. In the bottom of the ninth, pinch-hitter Howie Kendrick doubled with one out against Nick Burdi. Victor Robles flew out to right field for the second out, Kendrick went to third. Eaton struck out to end the inning.

Extra innings in D.C., all even at 3-3.

Update V: The bullpen had trouble keeping the Pirates off the board in the 10th. Pinch-hitter Melky Cabrera doubled off of Matt Grace. Frazier reached on an errant throw by Grace to Zimmerman. The throwing error was charged to Grace and left runners on the corners. Justin Miller recorded an out which moved runners to second and third. Miller than allowed a monster three-run shot to right-center field off the bat of pinch-hitter Colin Moran on an 0-2 pitch. It was his second career pinch-hit homer.

The Pirates lead the Nats 6-3.

Update VI: In the bottom of the tenth, former Nats reliever Felipe Vázquez, then know as Felipe Rivero, came on for the Pirates. He recorded the first two outs. Juan Soto doubled to left field for his first hit of the game. Zimmerman flew out to first base to end the game.

Final score: the Pirates 6, the Nationals 3. The Nats are 2-4 at home, 6-6 overall.
