David Carpenter activated, Aaron Barrett placed on 15-day DL

The Nationals don't have to worry about pulling an active pitcher off their 25-man roster to activate right-hander David Carpenter.

Right-hander Aaron Barrett has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right biceps strain. Carpenter was activated officially today to take Barrett's place on the roster. He has previously pitched for Houston, Atlanta, Toronto and the New York Yankees.

Carpenter started the season with the New York Yankees but was designated for assignment June 3 after struggling to a 4.82 ERA in 18 2/3 innings. His stock rose in 2013-14 as the setup man for the Braves' Craig Kimbrel. During those two seasons in Atlanta, Carpenter put together a 2.63 ERA in 126 2/3 innings.

He has a 95 mph and is familiar with the National League East. Carpenter arrives at a critical moment for the Nationals bullpen, who has blown three-straight seventh-inning leads.

Barrett has gone 1-2 with a 10.00 ERA in his last 15 games and struggled to keep his slider down in the zone, especially Thursday in Milwaukee. Last season, he had a 3-0 record and 2.66 ERA in 50 games out of the Nats bullpen.
