Davis out of lineup due to illness

The Orioles are beginning a six-game homestand tonight without their starting first baseman. Chris Davis was sent home today due to flu-like symptoms that may be contagious. Manager Buck Showalter wasn't taking any chances. Steve Pearce is starting at first base, with Nelson Cruz in left field and Delmon Young serving as the designated hitter. Davis was sick "all day yesterday," according to Showalter. "It may be contagious and we don't want it passed around," he added. Davis could return to the ballpark later today. Showalter doesn't want to broadcast whether Davis will be unavailable for the game. Matt Wieters is here and will remain with the team for the remainder of the season. He's no longer wearing an immobilizer on his right elbow. Ubaldo Jimenez is scheduled to throw 60-65 pitches tonight at short-season Single-A Aberdeeen. The Orioles will check his command and right ankle before deciding his next step. Showalter said Jimenez threw a simulated game in Seattle and had two "good" workdays where the ankle wasn't an issue. "I expect him to be physically fine tonight," Showalter said. Asked whether Jimenez will return to the rotation once he's ready, Showalter replied, "A lot of things can happen between now and then. We'll see where we are. But initially I'd say he's in the rotation." According to multiple reports, the Orioles are no longer "in on" Twins catcher Kurt Suzuki. I've heard that their interest in Suzuki has been exaggerated. They had one brief discussion with the Twins. Here's the Angels' lineup: Calhoun RF Trout CF Pujols 1B Hamilton DH Aybar SS Kendrick 2B Navarro LF Freese 3B Conger C Weaver RHP
