Gallagher removed from Orioles' 40-man roster

The Orioles shaved another catcher off their 40-man roster.

They’re down to two.

The club announced tonight that Cam Gallagher declined his outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk and elected free agency after clearing waivers. Gallagher was selected off waivers from the Padres Sept. 11 but didn’t play for the Orioles.

Gallagher was eligible for arbitration. That list is down to six players.

Anthony Bemboom accepted his outright assignment to Norfolk, as previously reported, and is expected to compete for a backup job in spring training.

Adley Rutschman and Mark Kolozsvary are the only catchers remaining on the 40-man, which recently held six. Kolozsvary was selected off waivers from the Reds Oct. 14.

There are 34 players remaining on the 40-man, but left-hander John Means must be activated from the 60-day injured list.

The Orioles have until Thursday to decide whether to exercise pitcher Jordan Lyles’ $11 million option or give him a $1 million buyout.

Executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias is attending the general managers meetings in Las Vegas that began today and run through Thursday.

Teams must set their 40-man rosters by next Tuesday in advance of the Dec. 7 Rule 5 draft in San Diego.
