Game 43 lineups: Nats at Marlins (Yelich scratched)

MIAMI - It seems to be a birthday weekend so far in South Florida.

Friday was Jayson Werth's 37th birthday. He collected two hits en route to a 4-1 Nationals win over the Marlins.

ross-pitching-red-sidebar.jpgToday is right-hander Joe Ross' 23rd birthday. He starts for the first time in majors on his birthday as the Nationals look for their first series win against the Marlins this season.

Incidentally, the next Nationals player with a birthday in season is third baseman Anthony Rendon on June 6.

Ross is 3-3 with a 2.63 ERA. He is also 16 days away from the one-year anniversary of his major league debut.

Ross is seeking his first win in May (0-3). He is 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in five starts against the Marlins and has pitched only 2 2/3 innings at Marlins Park. He left his only start here with the blister on his finger on April 20.

His opponent is Marlins ace right-hander Jose Fernandez, who is 5-2 with a 3.21 ERA. Fernandez is a stunning 20-1 over 30 starts with a 1.65 ERA at home in his career. Twenty of his 27 career wins have been at home. He is 5-0 with a 1.09 ERA in eight career starts against the Nationals.

Fernandez has already defeated the Nationals twice this season, combining to go 13 innings with only two runs allowed.

Manager Dusty Baker said he would alter the lineup and give his starters rest today. Ben Revere returns to the leadoff spot, while Werth and Ryan Zimmerman start the game on the bench. Chris Heisey is in left field and Clint Robinson is at first base.

A programming reminder: tonight's game will be broadcast on FOX.

Update: Marlins scratched Christian Yelich (back spasms). Ichiro Suzuki will play left field and lead off.
