Game 54 lineups: Nats vs. Phillies

The Nationals finally defeated the Phillies with last night's 5-1 victory. Philadelphia had won six straight over the Nats to begin the season. Today, the Nats and Phillies embark on a doubleheader with Game 1 featuring right-hander Austin Voth (0-5, 7.17 ERA) against veteran Aaron Nola (5-3, 2.92 ERA).

Nats manager Davey Martinez will go with right-hander Paolo Espino as his starter in Game 2. Espino pitched in 12 games for the Brewers and Rangers in 2017, starting two for Milwaukee, and has a curveball that reaches an incredible 3,000 rpm. Average curveballs hover around 1,750 rpm. With such spin, the dive action of his curveball can induce an extremely high groundball rate.

Right-hander Wil Crowe is the Nats 29th man for today's doubleheader. He can pitch in either - or both - seven-inning games.

Voth is looking for his first win of 2020 after a solid start Sept. 16 at Tampa Bay. In a 4-2 Nats win in 10 innings, Voth went five innings, allowing only one run on four hits with three walks, two of which were intentional, and six strikeouts. This will be his first start against the Phillies.

He pitches much better at home in his career, going 2-2 with a 3.80 ERA in 10 games at Nats Park and 1-5 with a 6.80 ERA in 12 games on the road.

In his six-year career, Nola has a 2.99 ERA at home and a 3.98 ERA on the road. Nola is 6-6 with a 3.86 ERA in 21 career starts against the Nats, and 3-2 with a 3.56 ERA in 10 starts at Nats Park with 62 strikeouts over 55 2/3 innings. The right-hander allowed a career-high five walks in his last start against the Mets.

Nats hitters that have good numbers against Nola include Yan Gomes (.385, two homers, four RBIs), Juan Soto (.200, two homers, four RBIs), Victor Robles (.364, one RBI) and Asdrúbal Cabrera (.278). Jay Bruce (0-for-1) is the only Phillie who has faced Voth.

Stevenson-Homers-Blue-v-PHI-sidebar.jpgAndrew Stevenson was the leadoff hitter for the Nats in last night's win, doubling and scoring the first run of the game in the first inning. Stevenson has hit safely in five straight games, going 5-for-13 (.385) with two doubles, five RBIs, with two walks, one stolen base and two runs scored. Soto went 0-for-2, but was walked twice and scored a run. He has reached base in eight of his last 12 plate appearances.

With his 10th stolen base during last night's game, Trea Turner joins three other major leaguers who have had at least 10 homers and 10 stolen bases in this shortened season: the Indians' José Ramírez (15 homers, 10 steals), the Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr. (15 homers, 10 steals) and the Rockies' Trevor Story (11 homers, 14 steals).
