Getting defensive

Miguel Tejada looks like he's been playing third base his entire baseball life. Tejada made another sliding stop and throw to retire Evan Longoria in the second inning, again displaying quick reflexes while preventing the ball from handcuffing him. And he turned a 5-3 double play to end the inning on Pat Burrell's broken-bat shot to third. Tejada made the right choice in racing to the bag rather than throwing to second base and trying to start a 5-4-3 double play. He's still got a cannon for an arm, so he had plenty of time. Tejada had an RBI single in the first and was hit on the left arm in the third. Meanwhile, Nolan Reimold couldn't catch up to Carlos Pena's fly ball to the warning track in left-center field, which went for a one-out double. You really can't blame the Achilles for that one. It didn't look like Reimold took the proper route to the ball, racing toward center before abruptly shifting back to the fence. The ball easily cleared his outstretched glove. Reimold struck out swinging to end the first inning. He hustled to first base on a ground ball and avoided a double play in the fourth, another sign that his left foot is feeling much better. Jeremy Guthrie has allowed one hit in three scoreless innings.
