Henderson elevated to leadoff spot in Orioles lineup

The Orioles have lost all four games against the Tigers this season, including last night’s 11-0 rout that left them five behind the Mariners for the last wild card. The White Sox are a half-game behind them.

Tonight’s game feels “must win.”

They all do at this point.

Manager Brandon Hyde has performed a major shakeup of his lineup, moving Gunnar Henderson to the leadoff spot for the first time. Henderson is starting again at third base.

Adley Rutschman is lowered to the cleanup spot for the sixth time. He’s batted second in 47 games, a spot occupied tonight by Ryan Mountcastle.

Ryan McKenna is playing center field and batting eighth, with Cedric Mullins headed to the bench. Jesús Aguilar is the designated hitter.

Mountcastle’s single last night to break up the no-hitter in the seventh inning was his 300th career hit.

Austin Voth earned a win in his last appearance, but it was a scoreless inning in relief Wednesday night at Nationals Park. His last start was Sept. 9 against the Red Sox, when he allowed two runs and five hits in four innings.

Voth has made one career start against the Tigers, allowing three runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings on June 29, 2019.

The Tigers are starting rookie left-hander Joey Wentz, the 40th-overall pick in the 2016 draft who’s surrendered eight runs and 14 hits in 17 1/3 innings in his first four major league games. He’s walked four batters, struck out 15 and allowed one home run.

Wentz made two starts in May and has made two this month.

In 111 minor league games, Wentz has registered a 3.39 ERA and 1.212 WHIP with 534 strikeouts in 496 2/3 innings.

Javier Báez has a seven-game hitting streak and is batting .371/.400/.613 (23-for-62) with two doubles, two triples, three home runs, 11 RBIs and 10 runs scored in his last 17.

The Tigers have won the last five season series against the Orioles. The teams didn’t play in 2020.

Last night marked the Tigers’ largest shutout victory over the Orioles since Sept. 29, 1981.
