In the minors

In the minors this afternoon, the Double-A Bowie Baysox snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 win at Erie. Brandon Waring and Joel Guzman hit back-to-back solo homers in the third. Miguel Abreu went 3 for 5 with an RBI and Ryohei Tanaka gave up 2 ER over 5 1/3 and is 2-0, 2.08. The Baysox improved to 10-4, matching the 1994 team's mark for best 14-game start ever at Bowie. The Baysox host Akron tomorrow at 7:05 to begin a homestand with a post-game fireworks show scheduled. Tim Bascom is Thursday's Baysox starting pitcher with Zach Britton going on Friday, Steve Johnson Saturday and Chorye Spoone scheduled for Sunday afternoon. In the South Atlantic League this afternoon, Greensboro scored one run in the 9th to edge Delmarva, 6-5. The Shorebirds are 8-6. Mikey Planeta went 2 for 5 with a three-run double and Tyler Stampone had an RBI double. Tyler Townsend had three hits and is 4 for 8 in his first two Delmarva games. Troy Patton is pitching for Norfolk at home tonight vs. Gwinnett. The Tides are 4-9 and have lost five in a row. Rhyne Hughes' 11-game batting streak, the longest in the league this year, ended last night. The Tides list Sunday's starter as to be announced. That could be the day Brad Bergesen pitches for Norfolk. During their five-game slide, the Tides have been outscored 37 to 13 and outhit, 61-35. Like their parent club, Norfolk is the only team in the International League without a sac bunt on the year. Frederick is playing at Potomac this evening. The first-place Keys are 8-4 with four wins in a row. Frederick is looking for its first five-game win streak since August of 2006. The Keys, who lead the league with 47 walks, have scored 26 runs during the win streak. The Keys are 4-2 both at home and on the road. Frederick has outscored its opponents 21-3 from the 8th inning on this year. Ronnie Welty has an early two-run homer for Frederick. Coming tomorrow: I'll post a story with Norfolk pitching coach Mike Griffin as he talks about Jake Arrieta's good start, Chris Tillman's struggles and Brad Bergesen's return to Norfolk.
