Kremer making major league debut today vs. Yankees

Dean Kremer has been recalled from the alternate camp site in Bowie and is making his major league debut this afternoon in the series finale against the Yankees at Camden Yards.

The corresponding roster move was made last night with David Hess optioned to the secondary site.

Kremer, who's wearing No. 64, came to the Orioles in the Manny Machado trade with the Dodgers. He led the minors in strikeouts in 2018 with 178 in 131 1/3 innings.

"He's been throwing the ball well in our secondary site at Bowie," said manager Brandon Hyde during today's Zoom conference call. "Built up as a starter. He's thrown quite a few pitches in his last outing, so I'm going to let him go. I like the way he threw in spring training, I like his stuff, I like the pitch mix that he has.

"He's got a starter arsenal with four pitches, knows how to pitch, can strike people out. I like the off-speed stuff. So excited to hand the ball to him to make his debut. It's a day he'll never forget and a special day for him and I just want him to have fun and enjoy it."

Asher Wojciechowski moves into a swingman role.

"I'd like to see Dean get some starts this last month of the season," Hyde said.

"I wouldn't totally dismiss (Wojciechowski) not making any more starts the rest of the season. But right now, Dean is on regular rest. We wanted Dean to make this start and see what he can do in September this year. We're excited about the way he's been throwing the ball in Bowie and looking forward to him finishing the year here and making some starts for us."

Renato Núñez is day-to-day with a sore hamstring. Hyde said outfielder Cedric Mullins also is day-to-day, though he didn't elaborate.

The lineup still hasn't been posted.

Masahiro Tanaka has posted a 3.38 ERA and 1.050 WHIP in six starts. He's walked only four batters in 26 2/3 innings.

Tanaka is 5-3 with a 3.72 ERA and 1.230 WHIP in 15 career starts against the Orioles. Chance Sisco is 3-for-8 with two doubles against him.

José Iglesias is batting .372 (16-for-43) with two strikes this season.

Hanser Alberto has matched his season high with a nine-game hitting streak.

Left-hander John Means is starting Tuesday against the Mets in New York. The Wednesday starter is listed as TBD.

Gleyber Torres and Gary Sánchez are out of the Yankees lineup today.
