Lyles out with stomach virus, O's going with bullpen game

The Orioles’ innings eater won’t be eating much today.

Jordan Lyles was scratched from his scheduled start against the Rays this afternoon due to a stomach virus, manager Brandon Hyde told the media before Sunday’s game. Reliever Austin Voth will start in Lyles’ stead, but isn’t expected to go more than a couple innings.

“We found out at about 7:30, 8 o’clock this morning,” said Hyde. “With the off-day tomorrow, that’s the one positive thing of this is that we do have a day off tomorrow, so I can use a lot of bullpen guys today and give them a day off tomorrow.”

Lyles hasn’t missed a turn in the rotation yet this season, making 13 starts and compiling a 5.10 ERA as Hyde’s veteran workhorse.

Voth, who was claimed off waivers from the Nationals on June 7, has pitched only 3 ⅓ innings with the Orioles, all in relief, surrendering two runs and striking out three. The 29-year-old righty started 22 games over five seasons in Washington.

“It’s only going to be a couple innings just because he hasn’t thrown much more than that,” Hyde said of Voth. “Before he got here, he hadn’t thrown in nine or 10 days. And then it’s been kind of quick outings just to kind of get him out there, so I’m not going to push him too far.”

With those same Nats coming to town Tuesday, Hyde doesn’t know yet if Lyles will be ready to pitch the series opener.

“I hope, but I have no idea right now,” Hyde said.

Trey Mancini is not in Sunday’s lineup as his right hand continues to heal, but Hyde couldn’t be more pleased with the age-30 season he’s getting from his first baseman.

“He hit the ball really well again yesterday with no luck, but I’m really happy with the year he’s had. He’s swinging the bat extremely well. Unfortunately, the hand is a little sore again today, but he’s having a really good first half (of the season). I’m really happy with how he’s playing.”

The skipper will have a few extra supporters in the ballpark for Father’s Day, including his son, Colton.

“Any time I can have him here, it’s a special day for me, and it’s even more special on Father’s Day,” said Hyde. “My youngest daughter (Addison) is here also. I wish Aria, my older daughter, was here, but I’ll hopefully see her soon.

“To be able to have a day game and spend the evening with them and an off-day with them tomorrow, that’s a great Father’s Day gift.”

First pitch between the Rays and Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards comes at 1:35 p.m.
