Martinez updates status of Murphy and Glover

The Nationals made roster moves prior to their 3-1 exhibition loss to the Twins Tuesday by moving right-hander Koda Glover (right shoulder tendinitis) to the 60-day disabled list.

The team selected the contract of veteran catcher Miguel Montero and placed second baseman Daniel Murphy (microfracture right knee surgery) and right-hander Joaquin Benoit (right forearm strain) on the 10-day disabled list.

After the game, manager Davey Martinez detailed the next few weeks for Murphy, confirming the veteran will travel with the team and continue baseball-related activities as he builds strength back in the knee. The good sign today was Murphy during pregame batting practice.

We want to make sure when he gets back that he's 100 percent and there's no ifs, ands or buts about it. He's working to get back as soon as possible, and hopefully we get him back soon."

Martinez said Murphy will be with the Nats in Cincinnati and Atlanta. "When he's ready to play some games, he'll head back to Florida for extended spring training," Martinez said.

The process is quite different for Glover, who did not pitch in spring training. Glover has had to deal with several issues the past year, including a torn labrum in his hip and now the tendinitis in his right shoulder.

"There's no map. He's progressing," Martinez said. "But we want to take it slow. He's had issues before, so we pretty much told him, 'Hey, until we feel you're really ready, we're going to take it slow with you because we want you to come back and be totally 100 percent.'

"His strength is starting to come back really well, so we'll see where we go after that."

Martinez confirmed that the Nats want Glover to stay in Florida's warmer climate where and build up his strength. He has not returned to throwing yet.
