More O’s minor league break-camp roster information

The Orioles, in conjunction with their affiliates at low Single-A Delmarva, high Single-A Aberdeen and Double-A Bowie announced their break-camp rosters today. The rosters could still change between now and opening day on Friday for those three clubs, but the bulk of the rosters were set today with this announcement.

Earlier, in this entry, we detailed the Triple-A Norfolk break-camp roster. The Tides open their season tomorrow night at home versus Charlotte. Left-hander Kevin Smith is expected to start that game.

The Bowie roster can carry 28 players, while the A-ball teams in Aberdeen and Delmarva feature 30-man rosters.

Based on today’s rosters and the one earlier from Norfolk, right now, Norfolk’s roster features six current members of the O’s top 30 prospects list as it appears on MLBPipeline.com. Six from that list are with Bowie, five with Aberdeen and none yet with Delmarva, which will feature a heavy international presence as expected. Norfolk will later add two ranked prospects in catcher Adley Rutschman when healthy and pitcher Kyle Bradish when he moves up from extended spring.

The 2021 draft picks - many of them anyway - ended last season with Delmarva, and 11 picks from that draft, including top pick Cowser, will begin the new season with Aberdeen.

Here are where the top 10 prospects are starting the year:

1) Rutschman, eventually with Norfolk
2) Grayson Rodriguez, Norfolk
3) Henderson, Bowie
4) Cowser, Aberdeen
5) DL Hall, extended spring and then Bowie
6) Westburg, Bowie
7) Mayo, Aberdeen
8) Stowers, Norfolk
9) Heston Kjerstad, injured, extended spring
10) Bradish, extended spring, then Norfolk

Pitcher Carter Baumler, who will likely join Delmarva, is still building up innings at extended spring training. He is fully healthy.

Infielder Greg Cullen and outfielder Reed Trimble have what are called short-term injuries and will likely begin the season on the injured list. Pitcher Antonio Velez, who was acquired as part of last night’s trade of Tanner Scott and Cole Sulser for prospects and a draft pick, has not yet been assigned to a roster. He ended last season pitching at Double-A.
