O's game blog: Time to regroup in Detroit

Well, at least the Orioles don't have to wait long to try and erase the taste of last night's loss in Detroit. The quick Saturday night to Sunday afternoon turnaround puts the O's back on the field today about 13 hours after last night's defeat.

The Orioles lost 8-4 to the Tigers in 12 innings on a walk-off grand slam by John Hicks. In the eighth inning the Orioles were down 2-0 when Trey Mancini hit a go-ahead three-run home run. But with two outs in the last of the ninth, Mychal Givens allowed a game-tying homer to Victor Reyes. When a Rio Ruiz single in the 12th put the O's ahead 4-3, they were positioned again to win. But that blew up in their faces in the last of the 12th. John Hicks hit a walk-off grand slam.

The Orioles bullpen, which had posted an ERA of 2.73 to lead the majors since Aug. 20, allowed six runs in 7 1/3 last night.

On the mound today for Baltimore is right-hander Asher Wojciechowski (2-8, 5.51 ERA). He had made 13 starts with a 1.299 WHIP and has allowed - per nine innings - 8.3 hits, 2.1 homers, 3.4 walks and 9.1 strikeouts.

Wojciechowski gave up four runs and six hits over two innings last Sunday against Texas. He felt some arm fatigue during that start and this outing was pushed back so he is working today on six days' rest.

Over his last three starts, he is 0-2 with an ERA of 9.00 allowing 13 earned runs and 17 hits in 13 innings. Wojo has an ERA of 7.05 over his past eight games. In six road games he is 1-4 with a 5.63 ERA and 1.188 WHIP.

Right-hander Edwin Jackson (3-9, 9.76 ERA) gets the start for the Tigers. The 36-year-old Jackson has also pitched for Toronto this season. In seven games with Detroit only, he is 2-4 with an 8.51 ERA and 1.891 WHIP. Over his past four starts - two versus the Twins and one each against the Yankees and Royals - he is 0-3 with a 13.81 ERA. He's allowed a .408 batting average against and 1.202 OPS in that span.

Jackson pitched briefly for the 2017 Orioles. In three games he posted an ERA of 7.20, allowing 11 hits and seven runs (four earned) over five innings.

The Orioles' Renato Núñez is one of 23 players in the American League with 25 or more homers and 80 or more RBIs.

Trey Mancini is batting .333 (20-for-60) and has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games.

Anthony Santander is 0-for-24 since his 12-game hitting streak ended. Chance Sisco is batting .175 in 34 games since the All-Star break.
