Orioles option Gillaspie (plus lineup and notes)

The Orioles activated reliever Joey Krehbiel from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-hander Logan Gillaspie to Triple-A Norfolk. Gillaspie was informed of the move last night.

Krehbiel, who was sidelined with right shoulder tendinitis, has a 2.74 ERA and 1.130 WHIP in 23 innings. Gillaspie has appeared in 11 games with the Orioles and allowed five earned runs (six total) and 15 hits in 10 1/3 innings.

Gillaspie was charged with four runs and five hits Monday in 1/3 of an inning in Toronto.

Adley Rutschman and Cedric Mullins are on the bench today.

Austin Hays is leading off and serving as the designated hitter. Trey Mancini is in right field, Ryan McKenna in center and Anthony Santander in left.

Richie Martin is the second baseman in a right-handed lineup.

Rutschman drove in the only run last night with a single in the seventh inning. He’s reached base in eight consecutive games and is 10-for-29 (.345) with five doubles, a home run, four RBIs, three walks and six runs scored since June 10.

Mancini has reached base in 17 of his last 18 games.

Ryan Mountcastle is 12-for-31 (.387) with four doubles, four home runs, eight RBIs and nine runs scored through a seven-game hitting streak.

Félix Bautista hasn’t allowed an earned run in 14 consecutive games dating back to May 18, a span of 12 1/3 innings.

Rays left-hander Jeffrey Springs is making his ninth start and 17th appearance. He has a 1.45 ERA and 0.906 WHIP with 50 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings.

Springs’ first two appearances came in relief against the Orioles and he retired all four batters with three strikeouts. He started on May 21 in Baltimore and allowed one hit with four walks and seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 scoreless innings.

Ji-Man Choi has collected a hit in 14 of his last 15 games, slashing .346/.397/.558 (18-for-52) with five doubles, two home runs, 13 RBIs, five walks and eight runs scored.

The Rays have allowed nine runs during a four-game losing streak that matches their season high. The Orioles shut them out last night for the first time since May 4, 2019.
