Ortiz, Carroll, Bundy and Dorian

The list of Orioles who are going to join the expanded September roster is bound to include some pitchers who have spent the summer on the shuttle. Extra arms are coveted over the final month.

We can speculate about guys like David Hess, Evan Phillips, Branden Kline, Chandler Shepherd, Tom Eshelman, Tanner Scott and Tayler Scott. We'll wonder about Keegan Akin. We'll assume that it's not happening for Dean Kremer, who's assigned to the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League.

Luis Ortiz hasn't pitched for Triple-A Norfolk since July 2, an undisclosed injury shutting him down. He rehabbed at the Ed Smith Stadium complex in Sarasota and made a relief appearance Aug. 15 with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League team, striking out the side in the fifth inning.

Ortiz didn't get into another game. The GCL season was cut short due to Hurricane Dorian.

Carroll-Delivers-Gray-sidebar.jpgCody Carroll hadn't pitched this season because of a disk injury in his lower back. He appeared in the same game as Ortiz, working the sixth inning and allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

Carroll's rehab assignment continued with another inning on Aug. 24 in Sarasota, where he allowed one hit and struck out three batters.

Ortiz and Carroll are fine physically, from what I'm told. They're on the 40-man roster and hoping to remain. It's full and a spot must be created for Mark Trumbo if he's able to play.

* Dylan Bundy has lowered his ERA below 5.00 for the first time since July 5. He's trying tonight to keep applying pressure to it.

A 4.65 ERA rose to 5.28 after Bundy allowed seven runs in one inning against the Rays on July 12. He got it down to 5.04 on Aug. 9 and surrendered six runs in 5 2/3 innings in his next start at Yankee Stadium.

What followed were seven innings against the Royals at Camden Yards with only one run allowed. And five innings against the Rays with two earned runs surrendered.

Bundy has given up 25 home runs this season, but only one in his last four starts and two this month. He hadn't gone back-to-back starts without a homer since June 6 and 11, 2018.

He'll try tonight to go three consecutive starts in the same season without allowing a home run since doing it in the first four games in 2017 - two each versus the Blue Jays and Red Sox totaling 26 1/3 innings.

Bundy's outing against the Royals this season was a stark contract to the unforgettable start on May 8, 2018, also in Baltimore, when he failed to retire a batter and allowed seven runs, including four homers. Meanwhile, he hasn't earned a decision at Kauffman Stadium while permitting six runs and 15 hits in 12 2/3 innings.

* The Orioles still expect to play their series against the Rays next week at Tropicana Field. The arrival of Hurricane Dorian and its Category 4 status won't impact the games beyond a possible doubleheader if the team needs an earlier departure.

The Gulf Coast League cancelled the rest of its season, including the playoffs, which led to an assumption that the Orioles would avoid the state of Florida.

The Trop has a roof. The hope, of course, is it stays that way.

Playing at a neutral site was the second option over moving the games to Camden Yards. But the Rays are moving ahead with their homestand and the Orioles will be ready to play at least one game against them Monday.

* Hanser Alberto collected five hits last night, marking the second time in Orioles history that three players have done it in the same season, according to STATS.

Alberto joined Renato Núñez on Aug. 14 in New York and Anthony Santander on Aug. 25 against the Rays at Camden Yards.

Tommy Davis (twice), Mark Belanger and Rich Coggins each had five-hit games in 1974.

Davis and Coggins did it on consecutive nights.

The Brewers did it this season with Ryan Braun, Lorenzo Cain and Christian Yelich.

* Reliever Ryan Eades became the 55th player to appear in a game for the Orioles, one short of last year's club record.

Eades tossed two scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and two strikeouts. He hadn't pitched since Aug. 21 with Norfolk.

Shameless plug alert: I'm appearing on "Wall to Wall Baseball" from noon-2 p.m. on MASN.
