Rendon helps get offense going, Corbin battles (Nats win 2-1)

Left-hander Patrick Corbin did a nice job of fighting out of a major jam in the top of the third.

The Brewers got on the board first with a solo homer well over the center field wall from shortstop Orlando Arcia. Pitcher Adrian Houser came up next and singled for his first major league base hit. Lorenzo Cain also singled.

Houser kept the Nats off the board and hitless in the first two frames. In the bottom of the third, Houser hit Trea Turner with a pitch. Adam Eaton's bunt with two strikes rolled foul down the line just before it reached third base.

But Anthony Rendon kept the inning alive with a double to the left field corner, scoring Turner. It was the Nats' first base hit of the game.

After three innings, the Nats and the Brewers are tied 1-1.

Update: Corbin got out of trouble several times, stranding 10 baserunners over six innings. The Brewers connected on seven hits, but only one run, with four walks and eight strikeouts. Corbin threw 110 pitches, but just 61 of them for strikes.

Houser has done very well, allowing only two hits over six innings with four strikeouts.

After six innings, the game remains tied 1-1.

Update II: Rendon hit an RBI double off the wall in right-center field, scoring Turner, to give the Nats the lead. Rendon has two doubles and two RBIs for the Nats, the only extra base hits and RBIs for the Nats so far tonight.

After eight innings, the Nats lead the Brewers 2-1.

Update III: In the top of the ninth, Sean Doolittle walked Hiura on four pitches. But he bounced back to strike out Christian Yelich on a slider. Ryan Braun grounded out to third base for the second out. Yasmani Grandal flew out to right field to end the game. Doolittle earned the save, Hunter Strickland (1-1) the win.

Final score: the Nats 2, the Brewers 1.
