Running the option

One of the more commonly asked questions in spring training involves players who are out of minor league options. You wants names. I want to pass them along to you. It's the perfect storm. It also won't require that you put on a heavy coat and grab a shovel. You can check out this list from mlbtraderumors that contains players who are out of options and have less than five years of service time. They have to clear waivers before being sent down. The Orioles' representatives are Matt Albers, Robert Andino, Jeremy Guthrie and Felix Pie. I knew about the last three, but I must have lost track of Albers. I forgot that he used up his last option in 2009. He'll have to earn a spot in the bullpen this spring, and right-handed competition is plentiful. If the Orioles keep a left-handed specialist and Koji Uehara makes it through camp in good health, that will probably leave two spots. David Hernandez or Jason Berken (yes, they're being grouped together again) could shift to the bullpen. We also have Cla Meredith, Kam Mickolio and Dennis Sarfate fighting for jobs. Stay tuned.
