Sedlock joins Orioles bullpen for today's doubleheader

BOSTON – The Orioles will begin a day-night doubleheader today at Fenway Park with veteran Jordan Lyles starting the opening game and apparently finish it with Denyi Reyes in the nightcap.

Reyes hasn’t been announced, but the Orioles selected the contract of former first-round draft pick Cody Sedlock from Triple-A Norfolk this morning and he’s in the bullpen.

Beau Sulser isn’t listed among the relievers.

A 40-man roster move is coming to accommodate Sedlock, who leaves the taxi squad and awaits his major league debut.

Reyes would be making his first major league start and only his second appearance. He tossed two scoreless and hitless relief innings on May 13 in Detroit.

There’s rain in the forecast beginning at 2 p.m. and continuing through 9 p.m.

Lyles has registered a 4.10 ERA and 1.348 WHIP in nine starts. Four of his five appearances this month have resulted in quality starts by definition.

Lyles faced the Red Sox on May 1 in Baltimore and held them to one run in six innings. In his only career start at Fenway Park, Lyles allowed just one run and five hits over seven innings.

Reyes would be pitching against his former organization. He spent seven seasons there before the Orioles signed him to a minor league contract in November.

Adley Rutschman is on the bench for Game 1. Chris Owings is the shortstop.

Anthony Santander had a career-high 23 walks last season in 110 games and 438 plate appearances. He has 23 this season in 45 games and 188 plate appearances.

Rougned Odor is 14-for-41 (.341) with four doubles, a triple, two home runs and 10 RBIs during a career-high 11-game hitting streak.

The Red Sox are starting Nathan Eovaldi this afternoon. He’s posted a 4.10 ERA and 1.159 WHIP in nine starts and averaged 1.5 walks and 9.9 strikeouts per nine innings.

He’s also surrendered 15 home runs in 48 1/3 innings.

Eovaldi shut out the Orioles over seven innings on April 30, allowing only three hits, walking none and striking out eight.

Josh Winckowski joined the team in Boston and is starting Game 2 in his major league debut. He made seven starts at Triple-A Worcester and posted a 3.13 ERA and 0.853 WHIP with six walks and 34 strikeouts in 31 2/3 innings.

Winckowski surrendered only two home runs.

The right-hander was one of five players acquired in the Feb. 2021 trade that sent outfielder Andrew Benintendi to the Royals. He’s the No. 13 prospect in the Red Sox’s system, per MLBPipeline.com.

“The stuff is really good,” manager Alex Cora told reporters. “The stuff is a lot better than last year. He’s aggressive. He’s not afraid. He has a lot of confidence. This is a guy who, he understands metrics and the whole process right now. He puts it into the game. I know he has been throwing the ball well and everybody’s excited.”

The Red Sox squandered two six-run leads last night in a 12-8 loss, their largest since Sept. 6, 2021 versus the Rays – also six runs.

Boston has scored in the first inning in each of the last four games.

JD Martinez has reached base in 16 of his last 22 plate appearances.

Xander Bogaerts has reached base in 25 consecutive games, four short of his career high.
