The latest on Mullins, Tate and Urías

NEW YORK – Cedric Mullins isn’t in tonight’s Orioles lineup for “personal reasons,” according to manager Brandon Hyde.

Hyde didn’t elaborate or confirm whether Mullins is at Yankee Stadium.

Mullins always plays against right-handed starters. And left-handed hitters are slashing .356/.430/.644 against Clarke Schmidt this season.

Not having Mullins atop the order tonight was bound to raise questions.

“It’s probably going to be one day,” Hyde said. “I’m not going to expand on that. It’s for personal reasons right now and we should see him back soon.”

Hyde said the club is still meeting to determine the status of reliever Dillon Tate, whose 30-day injury rehab assignment ended yesterday.

Tate has to be reinstated and put on the active roster or optioned.

“We have nothing to update as of right now,” Hyde said, “but sometime soon.”

Perhaps the club is waiting until after tonight's game, when it knows the extent of the bullpen usage.

Ramón Urías is continuing his rehab assignment tonight at High-A Aberdeen after serving as the designated hitter yesterday in Game 1 of a doubleheader and going 0-for-2 with three walks, two strikeouts and two runs scored.

Urías, who’s playing third base tonight, has targeted the weekend series against the Rangers at Camden Yards for his return. He hasn’t played since straining his left hamstring on May 8.

“We’re just going to kind of evaluate it from there,” Hyde said.

Gunnar Henderson gets another start at third base in Urías absence. He has 11 hits in his last 11 games and is 4-for-11 in his last three, his average climbing to .206 with a .337 on-base percentage.

Henderson had a pinch-hit, two-run double last night in the seventh inning to give the Orioles a 6-5 lead.

“I’m really encouraged by the way Gunnar’s swinging the bat,” Hyde said.

“Like I’ve said a million times, it’s not abnormal for a young player to go through struggles, or older players to go through struggles. It’s harder when it’s a guy that’s trying to really produce and find his way. I give Gunnar a lot of credit. To be a young player today with hype, a ton of pressure, a lot of people are expecting big things. This game is not that easy and teams aren’t just going to allow you to have huge success early a lot of times. Gunnar’s done a great job of just taking a day-to-day approach, super processed oriented. Our hitting guys are doing an amazing job with him on a daily basis. He’s really prepared when he goes into a game. He stays ready. Last night, doesn’t get the start but stays ready, and had a huge hit for us.

“People have got to remember he’s 21-years-old, so to do what he’s doing right now, he’s going to be a lot of fun to watch going forward.”
