Tonight's pitchers: Matusz vs. Gabino

LHP Brian Matusz (2-2, 6.75) tonight will make his 5th Major League start of this season, his 4th on the road and the 1st of his career vs. Minnesota. Matusz, the fourth pick in round one of the draft last year, was the winning pitcher Wednesday at Tampa. He took a four-hitter into the 6th inning before giving up a three-run homer to Ben Zobrist. He pitched 5 1/3 that night, allowing seven hits and four runs with no walks and seven strikeouts. Matusz fanned just six batters over his first two starts, but over his last two starts, he has fanned 14 in 11 innings. In three road starts, he is 2-1, 6.92 and the Orioles are 2-2 when he starts. Left-handed hitters are just 0 for 8 with five strikeouts vs. Matusz, but right-handed batters are hitting .419 (31 for 74) vs. Matusz. In 19 minor league starts this year, between Frederick and Bowie, Matusz went 11-2, 1.91. He was 7-0, 1.55 in eight Bowie starts. RHP Armando Gabino will make his Major League debut tonight. The 25-year-old from the Dominican spent all this season with Triple-A Rochester, going 5-3 with one save and an ERA of 2.83. He made 36 appearances, five as a starter with Rochester and in 86 innings gave up 65 hits with 22 walks and 55 strikeouts. Opponent batters hit .215 off him. In his five starts, Gabino went 2-0, 2.16 allowing 17 hits in 25 innings. Over his last three outings, all starts, he went 2-0, 1.62. With Rochester, lefty hitters batted .210 off him and right-handed batters hit .219. Gabino signed originally with Cleveland and was selected by Minnesota in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft in 2004.
