Tyler Wells comes off IL to start tonight's game

The Orioles are making more changes to the rotation, this one based on a pitcher’s good health.

Tyler Wells has been reinstated from the 15-day injured list and is handling tonight’s start against the Blue Jays to conclude a four-game series at Camden Yards.

Spenser Watkins has been optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to create room on the active roster. He was scheduled to start Saturday afternoon against the Red Sox at Camden Yards.

Additional details on the rotation haven’t been announced, but Dean Kremer was supposed to start tonight.

Jordan Lyles is recovering from flu-like symptoms that knocked him out of Monday’s doubleheader. His status has been day-to-day, and it’s unknown whether he’s an option for the weekend.

Wells hasn’t pitched for the Orioles since straining his left oblique on July 27. He started Friday at High-A Aberdeen on an injury rehab assignment and threw 31 pitches in 2 1/3 innings.

The Orioles were expected to keep Wells in the minors for at least one more start but decided to activate him.

Wells started in Toronto on June 16 and allowed one run in six innings.

Watkins has a 4.37 ERA and 1.342 WHIP in 20 games (19 starts). He must stay down at least 15 days unless replacing an injured player.

Alek Manoah is starting tonight for the Blue Jays, with the Orioles 3 ½ games back for the last wild card spot.

Manoah has made 26 starts for the Blue Jays and gone 13-7 with a 2.48 ERA and 1.018 WHIP in 163 innings. He’s hit 14 batters.

Right-handers are batting .164/.221/.258 against Manoah this season, and left-handers are batting .252/.319/.382.

Manoah has a 3.78 ERA and 1.140 WHIP in three starts against the Orioles this season. He’s allowed seven runs and 13 hits with six walks and 19 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings.

Ryan Mountcastle and Cedric Mullins are 4-for-15 with two home runs lifetime against Manoah. Austin Hays is 0-for-10 with five strikeouts.
