Upcoming starters, Machado note and more

KANSAS CITY - The Orioles will face three left-handed starters when their road trip shifts to Arlington.

The Rangers are sending Cole Hamels (7-8, 3.82 ERA), Martin Perez (1-3, 5.30 ERA) and Derek Holland (1-1, 4.73 ERA) to the mound for the three-game series that begins on Friday. The Orioles list Kevin Gausman (2-5, 4.30 ERA), Ubaldo Jimenez (9-8, 4.26 ERA) and Miguel Gonzalez (9-10, 4.78 ERA) as their starters.

Hamels is 1-1 with a 4.73 ERA and 1.500 WHIP in four starts since the Rangers acquired him from the Phillies on July 31. He's allowed 14 runs and 31 hits in 26 2/3 innings, with nine walks and 23 strikeouts.

The Orioles are 17-12 against left-handed starters, including last night's 3-2 loss to the Royals in a game started by southpaw Danny Duffy.

The Orioles' PR staff dug up this one:

Manny Machado swing close gray.pngThird baseman Manny Machado currently has 99 career doubles. At 23 years, 51 days old, he would be the youngest Oriole to notch 100 since the franchise moved to Baltimore in 1954.

According to STATS, Cal Ripken, Jr. (23.332) is the youngest Oriole to amass 100 doubles.

Machado would also reach the milestone in the fewest games played at 414. Nick Markakis holds the Orioles record in 419 games.

Among active players in the majors, Machado would become the sixth-fastest to reach 100 doubles.

The Orioles are trying tonight to snap a six-game losing streak and avoid falling two games below .500 for the first time since July 25.

Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen has held opponents to a .138 average (16-for-116) with runners in scoring position this season, which leads all qualifying starting pitchers in the majors.

The Orioles announced that an online charity auction for the 2,130 and the 2,131 numbered Orioles-themed Maryland license plates will begin Thursday at noon in honor of the 20th anniversary of Ripken's record-breaking 2,131st consecutive game streak. Maryland residents who plan on using the winning license plate on a Maryland registered car can visit www.orioles.com/2131 to bid on the plates. The auction will last until the evening of Sunday, Sept. 6, the actual date of Ripken's record-breaking game.

Proceeds from the auctions will benefit the Orioles Charitable Foundation, which has raised nearly $110,000 since the debut of the club's license plate program in 2012. That year, the Orioles, in conjunction with the Maryland MVA, created Orioles-themed, State of Maryland license plates that feature the cartoon bird along with a four-digit number.

The Orioles will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Ripken's streak on Tuesday at the 7:05 p.m. game against the Rays. Ripken will throw out the ceremonial first pitch as part of a variety of commemorative elements planned to honor the anniversary.

Fans are encouraged to submit their photos from the historic record-breaking game, record-tying game, other Streak Week games or activities, or any photos taken with Ripken on Twitter or Instagram using #My2131.
