Updates on Sammy Solis and Erick Fedde

Left-hander Sammy Solis is looking to have a complete season with the Nationals, and hoping to stay healthy after fighting through injuries the past few campaigns. Solis was limited to only five games in 2014 after being shut down in early June due to elbow discomfort.

He had 13 starts in 2013. In 2012, he underwent Tommy John surgery. His career-high innings pitched was 96 2/3 in 2011. The 26-year-old was a second-round selection in 2010.

Nationals director of player development Mark Scialabba is hoping Solis builds innings and games this season. If he is healthy out of spring training, Double-A Harrisburg is the obvious starting point for him in 2015.

"We are looking forward to seeing Sammy in the spring and (have him) get hands-on (attention)," Scialabba said. "Hopefully, this is a year where he can stay healthy and help us. Because he certainly has the talent to help us at the major level. It's just a matter of being able to stay on the field. We have a positive outlook on Sammy."

Fedde1-sidebar-1.jpgRight-hander Erick Fedde, the Nats' top selection in last year's draft out of UNLV, started to lightly throw a baseball in December as he recovers from June Tommy John surgery. Before the injury, Fedde had so much plus-plus stuff that he was projected to be a top 10 draft selection.

Fedde is projected, based on the club's past Tommy John recovery timelines, to need about 12 or 13 months to get back on the mound after surgery. That appears to be mid-season as a reachable goal for Fedde to get some limited innings as he builds up from three to four to five frames a game.

"It's going to happen organically over time when we set the program," Scialabba said. "If you were to say estimating out those months, (June or July) is probably a fair assessment (for his return)."

Scialabba said Fedde is on schedule in Florida and continues to work through his throwing program.
