Wojciechowski DFA, Zimmermann starting Game 2

Baltimore native Bruce Zimmermann has been summoned from the alternate camp site in Bowie and announced as the probable starter for Game 2 of today's doubleheader against the Rays at Camden Yards.

The corresponding roster move will be made following Game 1.

Asher Wojciechowski has been designated for assignment and the Orioles recalled relievers Branden Kline and Evan Phillips from the secondary site. Phillips was added as the 29th man.

One of the relievers could return to Bowie after Game 1 to create room for Zimmermann, a late arrival at the secondary camp after testing positive for COVID-19.

Zimmermann posted a 2.58 ERA and 1.204 WHIP last summer in 101 1/3 innings at Double-A Bowie and a 4.89 ERA and 1.603 WHIP in 38 2/3 innings with Triple-A Norfolk.

The rotation now holds three rookies, including Keegan Akin and Game 1 starter Dean Kremer.

Wojciechowski lost his rotation spot and was carrying a 6.81 ERA and 1.622 WHIP in 10 games (seven starts). He surrendered nine runs and nine hits in his last two appearances over 3 2/3 innings, walking four batters and serving up a pair of three-run homers to the Yankees' Luke Voit.

Phillips has made 11 relief appearances with the Orioles this summer and allowed five runs and 11 hits with eight walks and 12 strikeouts in 11 innings. Kline tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings against the Yankees in Game 1 of a Sept. 4 doubleheader. He struck out three batters.

The Orioles didn't recall an infielder today, which indicates that X-rays taken on shortstop José Iglesias' shin last night came back negative. Iglesias was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning and he's serving as the designated hitter in Game 1.

Ryan Mountcastle is in left field. Pat Valaika is playing second base and Andrew Velazquez is the shortstop.

Hanser Alberto is the third baseman, with Rio Ruiz on the bench against left-hander Blake Snell.
