Zach Britton on last of eighth and top of ninth (plus other clubhouse quotes)

Zach Britton admitted that for a brief moment today, he was like a fan. While he was warming up in the last of the eighth inning Delmon Young came to bat. Seconds later, Young lined a pitch into left field to score three runs and give the Orioles a 7-6 lead. Britton let out a cheer in the bullpen and then realized now he was going into the game and it would be a save situation in the ninth. So it was an interesting few minutes for the O's closer. He took a moment to notice how crazy the crowd was after Young's clutch hit. "It was a rush," Britton said. "We had a great turnout. We have great fans that get really, really loud. I went crazy and then I had to check myself a little bit knowing I was going into the game. Been watching us do that all year. britton-hundley-fist-bump-sidebar.jpg"I jumped up out there. To stage a comeback like that, in a game, I mean this is an important game. Going into their place 2-0, that's a big deal." Then Britton took the mound and tried to steady himself to protect a one-run lead. He did that, making quick work of Detroit on just 11 pitches in the ninth for his first career postseason save. "You know, it's just any other game." Britton said. "It's any other inning. Just focus on throwing my fastball over the plate and getting some ground balls." And while the Detroit bullpen has been terrible in this series, the O's bullpen has pitched 9 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs. "The job that (Kevin) Gausman did today, it was pretty impressive for a young pitcher to come into a situation like that," Britton said. "And it's not like he was facing the bottom of the lineup. He faced the heart of the lineup a couple of times and he did a great job. If we don't get that outing from him, we don't win this game." Some other clubhouse quotes from today: Adam Jones on Young: "He's ready. Doesn't matter if he's not playing, he's ready. He's a professional player, a professional hitter. Professional. Buck (Showalter) has a lot of faith in him as does everybody on this team. We don't quit. That is how this team is made up." Jones on what he expects from Young: "He's been doing that for a long time in his career. If you look at his postseason numbers, they're pretty solid. Buck trusts him in that situation and the team does also. No better man to have up in that spot than Delmon." Jones on the relay in the eighth that cut down Miguel Cabrera at the plate: "The name of the game is our defense. You hit the cutoff man, good things happen. (Jonathan) Schoop made a great throw to home. Play catch. That is something we do really well." Jones on the confidence of the team: "There is always room for improvement. In anything. So we still have room to improve in every aspect." Jones on the Orioles' ability to make comebacks: "That's the makeup of this team. We're down, we know we are a bloop and a blast away from getting back in any ballgame. The guy that did the most work was (Kevin) Gausman. They scored five and then he goes three-plus innings and holds it intact." Steve Pearce on his RBI hit in the eighth: "It was huge. We kept the momentum going. When Jones got on and then (Nelson) Cruz got on, you could see the momentum building. I did whatever I could not to strike out there. Buckled down and got the job done." Pearce on the crowd: "The place gets loud. You almost have to find some way then to dial it down. But it's a great feeling and we love it. The atmosphere was electric. It's a great feeling to play in front of an atmosphere like that. The hard part is keeping your composure and we did that in the eighth." Pearce on why he thinks Young does well in pinch-hit situations: "You know, he keeps everything simple. He has the same approach and routine every day. When Delmon comes up, something is going to happen. He comes up in big spots and consistently gets it done. You've almost come to expect it. I know that is who I want at the plate with the game on the line." Wei-Yin Chen on his poor outing today: "During the season, I was able to make the adjustment, but today I was not able to. I feel really upset about it, but the good thing is the team got a win. So the result is all good and now I have to work to be better next time."
