David Hess has allowed 13 runs in 19 hits in his last three starts over 12 2/3 innings following 6 1/3 no-hit innings in Toronto. In his only career start against the White Sox, he surrendered three earned runs (four total) and six hits with seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Daniel Palka is 2-for-3 with two home runs against Hess. He’s 1-for-35 this season, his hit coming on Wednesday to break an 0-for-32 streak. The White Sox optioned him to Triple-A Charlotte.
Left-hander Manny Bañuelos is making his first start since 2015 with the Braves. He’s been used out of the bullpen in four games this season and allowed four runs with seven walks in 10 1/3 innings. He’s never faced the Orioles.
Banuelos is replacing injured Lucas Giolito.
Alex Cobb is throwing a simulated game this afternoon on the Camden Yards field, with a high-speed camera set up behind him. Pitching coach Doug Brocail stood on the infield grass to watch Cobb, who returned from the injured list to start Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader.
The Orioles are off Thursday and Cobb could be pushed back to Friday or Saturday in Minnesota.
Triple-A Norfolk first baseman Ryan Mountcastle was named the International League’s Batter of the Week. He posted a .370 average and led the league with four home runs, 11 RBIs, eight runs scored, and .889 slugging percentage and 24 total bases.
Mountcastle’s 17 RBIs this season rank second in the league. And he’s only 22.
