Ryan Mountcastle stays in left field.
The Orioles have lost three games in a row and nine of 11 and are 2 1/2 behind the Blue Jays, who hold the eighth playoff spot in the American League. They’re three games under .500 for the first time this season.
Alex Cobb faced the Blue Jays on Aug. 17 in Baltimore and allowed five runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. He’s 3-6 with a 4.87 ERA and 1.288 WHIP in 12 career starts against them.
Randal Grichuk has 16 doubles, 17 home runs and 39 RBIs in 34 games against the Orioles. He’s 7-for-11 with three doubles and a home run lifetime against Cobb.
Right-hander Taijuan Walker is making his first start with the Blue Jays after joining them Thursday in a trade with the Mariners. He has a 4.29 ERA and 1.333 WHIP in four career starts against the Orioles in 21 innings.
Tanner Roark starts for the Blue Jays on Sunday. The Orioles are starting Jorge López, according to bullpen coach Darren Holmes.
Reliever Hunter Harvey remained on the injured list today and Holmes said on a Zoom call that the right-hander won’t immediately be tossed into the closer’s role. The team will ease him into competition.
Holmes also said Harvey won’t work on back-to-back days, with perhaps two or three separating his appearances.
The Orioles lead the majors with 11 bunt hits.
A scoring change from last night’s game now gives Mountcastle only one RBI in the sixth inning on his ground ball to Travis Shaw, who’s charged with a throwing error that allowed the second run to score. Mountcastle is still credited with a hit.
The two RBIs never made sense. The hit is awarded on a ground ball that would have produced an out with a good throw or a scoop by first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
