Orioles promote Knight and Diplán, DFA Anderson and Leyba

The Orioles retooled their bullpen today by selecting the contracts of right-handers Dusten Knight and Marcos Diplán from Triple-A Norfolk, two more potential major league debuts.

Forty-nine players have been used this season, with 12 making their debuts.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Orioles decided pitcher Shaun Anderson and infielder Domingo Leyba would be designated for assignment. Leyba was in Norfolk.

Knight is wearing No. 67 and Diplán No. 78.

Rule 5 pick Tyler Wells remains on the injured list. He hasn’t pitched since July 19 due to tendinitis in his right wrist.

He’s likely to be reinstated on Friday.

The Orioles are down to four starters but off-days Thursday and Monday temporarily eliminate the need for a fifth. They optioned Alexander Wells to Norfolk last night.

The Orioles close out their series in New York and their road trip tonight with Matt Harvey trying to set a franchise record with four consecutive scoreless starts of six or more innings.

Here’s the list of pitchers with three, dating back to the St. Louis Browns:

Barney Pelty - 1907
Rube Waddell - 1909
Bill Dinneen - 1909
Jack Fisher - 1960
Milt Pappas - 1964
Tom Phoebus - 1967
Jim Palmer - 1978
Fernando Valenzuela - 1993
Kevin Gausman - 2016
Matt Harvey - 2021

Harvey faced the Yankees on April 26 and allowed one run and three hits in six innings. He’s made five career starts against them and surrendered only six runs and 18 hits in 33 2/3 innings.

One start at Yankee Stadium resulted in two runs scoring in 8 2/3 innings.

Cedric Mullins is leading off, as usual, and carrying a 12-game hitting streak. His 128 hits lead the American League and are one behind the Padres’ Adam Frazier.

Ramón Urías is playing second base and Richie Martin is starting at shortstop and batting ninth.

Anthony Santander is on the bench tonight.
