O's Bench and Bullpen Short

Huff's roster spot won't be filled until tomorrow, so the Orioles will be playing with a short bench tonight against the Angels.

As Roch Kubatko mentioned in his blog, Huff's spot will be filled tomorrow by either newly acquired first base prospect Rhyne Hughes or Michael Aubrey who is a DH and first baseman down in Norfolk.

My guess is we'll see Aubrey in an O's uniform tomorrow. MacPhail made it sound like the organization wanted to get a better look at Rhyne Hughes before calling him up. He's was just acquired two days ago from the Tampa Bay Rays as part of the Gregg Zaun deal.

Andy said one of the reasons the Orioles wanted Hughes was because he anticipated playoff contenders would show interest in trading for Huff by the end of August. MacPhail admitted the interest by the Tigers, though, came earlier than expected. Still, if I were a betting woman I think Hughes stays down in Norfolk for now.

On another note, Dave Trembley said we can expect to see a move to get a fresh arm in the bullpen as early as right after tonight's game. With the recent struggles of Matt Albers, it's widely believed he'll be sent down to Norfolk while Kam Mickolio is recalled.

Obviously, after last night's thirteen inning game, and the fact that the O's used six relievers, it's safe to say the bullpen is a bit short tonight. Trembley said Danys Baez is his closer in a save situation, but other than that, it's sort of a free for all. If Hernandez doesn't go deep in the game, Trembley could be in a tight spot.

For those of you wondering why MacPhail didn't make a move last night after the day game to give the bullpen some help, my guess is it's because Mickolio is the pitcher they wanted to call up, and because he pitched yesterday in Norfolk they figured he couldn't pitch tonight anyway. That's just a guess.
