The Nationals announced there were no major adjustments to their minor league coaching staff for 2017, with each level retaining the same coaches as they had in 2016.
The exception was strength and conditioning, where a number of coaches were promoted or assigned more responsibility.
Mike Warren was named strength and conditioning coach at Triple-A Syracuse. Brett Henry was promoted from Syracuse to the major league strength and conditioning staff.
Tony Rogowski was promoted from Double-A Harrisburg to Latin American strength and conditioning supervisor, as well as Gulf Coast League Nationals strength and conditioning coach.
RJ Guyer was promoted from low Single-A Hagerstown to strength and conditioning coach for Harrisburg.
Gabe Torres was promoted from short-season Single-A Auburn to strength and conditioning coach at High Single-A Potomac.
A new addition is Jorge Vasquez, who is named strength and conditioning coach for the Hagerstown Suns. Vasquez has spent time in the Miami Marlins system, as well as St. Leo University and the University of South Florida.
Also new to the Nationals is Shane Hill. Hill has been name the strength and conditioning coach for the Auburn Doubledays. Hill received his master’s from the University of Florida in 2016 and graduated from Nova Southeastern (Fla.) University.
It’s a big deal that the Nationals retained every coach at every level. Prospects will have the ability to continue focusing on one message from coaches and coordinators they have grown comfortable with from opening day to the final game in September.
It feels almost unprecedented, at least in recent history within the organization, to have such a low turnover of coaches. It is usually a given that one or two coaches just move on. Seeing this group stay together can pay dividends in 2018 and beyond when these players reach the big leagues and have been hearing one voice their entire development.
The announcement of the unchanged coaching staff further demonstrates that these coaches are happy as well: When you enjoy and respect your job, it can only help those that you are coaching and teaching.
