Ray Lewis was excused from Wednesday's practice to deal with a family matter.
According to The NFL Network, the Ravens' 12-time Pro Bowl linebacker has also been excused from tonight's preseason game against the Chiefs.
Lewis apparently has a family member who is ill, which is the reason for his absence.
Head coach John Harbaugh had said that even if Lewis had been available tonight, he would not have given the 16-year veteran as many reps as the rest of the Ravens' starters because of Lewis' vast NFL experience.
"There are certain guys who don't need to play that much," Harbaugh said on Wednesday. "I think Ray Lewis is an example; Ed Reed is an example. So I think those guys will be pulled a little earlier."
With Lewis out, look for Jameel McClain and Dannell Ellerbe to get the start at the two inside linebacker spots on the Ravens' defense, although veteran Brendan Ayanbadejo could mix in, as well.
