Emotional moment for Torrey Smith, Ravens’ offense awakens (Take 14-13 lead)

The crowd chanted “Tor-rey, Tor-rey” as the second-year wideout ran off the field, pointing up to the sky.

On the same day his brother died, Torrey Smith got the Ravens on the board with a 25-yard touchdown reception down the visiting sideline with 9:45 to go in the second quarter, cutting the Patriots’ lead to 13-7.

Smith’s first catch of the day provided a nice finish to Baltimore’s first extended drive of the night - 13 plays for 82 yards and 5:53 drained off the clock. Quarterback Joe Flacco went 5-for-7 for 60 yards on the drive and is now 8-for-11 for 69 yards, with a touchdown and an interception.

Baltimore’s offense needed something positive to happen - Smith certainly did - after the team failed to earn a first down before that drive on a rough day for the young receiver.

Update: Just like that, the Ravens have the lead. Pinned to his own 8-yard line, Flacco just led Baltimore on an impressive 10-play, 92-yard drive that gave the home team a 14-13 advantage.

Flacco completed four of five passes for 67 yards and a 20-yard touchdown on the possession, and the scoring play was a pretty one.

Flacco found Dennis Pitta short of the first down, and the suddenly unstoppable tight end did the rest of the work. Pitta shed two tackles and hurdled safety Steve Gregory as he made his way down the Ravens’ sideline into the end zone.

Pitta already has 14 receptions for 158 yards and two touchdowns, and the third game of the year isn’t even over.

Flacco’s looking more like his Week 1 self, as well. He’s 12-for-16 with 136 yards, two touchdowns and a pick.

Update II: And this is officially a back-and-forth affair.

Brady just guided the Pats 81 yards to paydirt in just nine plays and 1:45. He found Julian Edelman in the middle of the end zone for a 7-yard score and New England is back in front, 20-14, at halftime.

It was a much-improved second quarter for the men in purple, who outgained New England 183-91 in the period and are very much in this one as it heads to the second half.

Ray Rice has 11 carries for 50 yards and Anquan Boldin has made three catches.
