The Ravens looked to the defensive side of the ball with back-to-back picks in the fifth round, taking Texas cornerback Chykie Brown and Mississipi State defensive end Pernell McPhee with the 164th and 165th overall picks, respectively.
Brown - whose first name is pronounced “SHOCK-ee” - measures 5-foot-11, 190 lbs. He started nine games for Texas this year before suffering a season-ending forearm injury against Kansas State.
His career interception total is very low; he only picked off two passes in 45 games at Texas, and both of those came in his junior year. Brown had 19 tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, seven pass breakups, one forced fumble and two pressures during the 2010 season.
McPhee (6-foot-3, 280 lbs.) made the All-SEC first-team as selected by SEC head coaches. He didn’t start playing football until his senior year of high school; he played basketball prior to that. McPhee committed to Southern Mississippi after his prep season, but started his college career at Itawamba (Miss.) Community College to improve his grades. He then transferred to Mississippi State in 2009.
During the 2010 season, McPhee registered 9.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups and 12 quarterback hurries.
