Suggs in rare form leading up to Steelers game

He didn't wear a t-shirt that read, "You bet your sweet ass I hate Pittsburgh" or one that said, "Hey Pittsburgh" with a Raven giving the middle finger on it.

But it is Steelers Week, after all, and so Terrell Suggs obviously brought his A-game during today's session with reporters.

The last time these two teams met, Suggs sacked Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger three times and delivered a sharp one-liner after the game, saying, "God can have his soul, but his ass belongs to me."

Today, Suggs stood by that statement ("There is nobody who can do it better than me," he said, when asked about his sack totals against Roethlisberger) and said he expects things to be hostile when the two arch rivals square off Sunday night.

"We've been declared war upon," Suggs said. "We are the enemy of the state, but who better than us?"

"We're bringing 53 men into the apocalypse," he added later, "and we ain't bringing flowers."

Terrell_Suggs-screaming-tall.jpgSuggs has been playing at a high level all season, recording six sacks and forcing two fumbles, but his energy level clearly gets ratcheted up another level for games against the Steelers. Even moreso, he seems to thrive on games played at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field.

"This is my Madison Square Garden," Suggs said. "I love playing in this stadium. I love the way the people treat me, the welcoming they give me with the No. 1's. I guarantee you the NFL, the world, will stop for this game, and everybody wants to see it. We will be ready, and we will act accordingly."

We're all aware that the Ravens have had their share of incidents with Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward over the years. Ward always seems to find himself in the middle of various shouting matches or crack-back blocks between these two teams, and he's drawn the ire of numerous Ravens defenders over the years.

Still, Suggs hopes that Ward, who missed Pittsburgh's last game with an ankle injury, will play Sunday night.

"I'm looking right at you, 86," said Suggs, looking square into the cameras and talking straight to Ward. "I need you to play. I need you to play. Please put on that 86 and that smile and all those things you do. We need all that for this game."

Some Ravens feel that the 35-7 beatdown that they put on Pittsburgh back in Week 1 won't play a factor in this game, and Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace said on a conference call with Baltimore reporters today that he's putting that game behind him.

But Suggs says he thinks that Sept. 11 game will give the Steelers extra motivation to bounce back this Sunday night.

"We think their piss is going to be a little hot," Suggs said, drawing more laughter from reporters. "They're definitely going to have some 'Let's get after them' to their game. But in hindsight, who knocked us out of the playoffs last year? In 2008, a certain team beat us to go to the Super Bowl and danced all over the field, held up the AFC championship trophy. We had to sit by and watch that.

"But every team has that. Peyton Manning had to go through New England. King James has to go through Boston. Jordan had to go through the Pistons. We are definitely going to have to see them again, especially to achieve what we want to achieve."
