Matusz’s first inning

Jeff Niemann retired the next three batters after Felix Pie’s home run, bringing left-hander Brian Matusz to the mound in the bottom of the first inning.

Matusz got two quick strikes on Gabe Kapler and struck him out on a changeup.

One away.

Matusz got two quick strikes on Carl Crawford and blew a fastball past him.

Two away.

Matusz got two quick strikes on Evan Longoria, who kept fouling off fastballs until taking a borderline pitch for a ball that ran the count full. Longoria fouled off three more before striking out on a changeup to end a 13-pitch at-bat.

Matusz threw 22 pitches in the inning, 18 for strikes.

Rays first baseman Carlos Pena just robbed Scott Moore of an extra-base hit with a diving stop along the line and flip to Niemann covering the bag.
