SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles should have their camp roster down to 27 or 28 by the end of the day, and it won’t include two left-handed relief candidates.
Those moves leave Michael Gonzalez as the only left-hander in the bullpen for the April 1 opener against the Rays.
Other cuts include David Riske, Ryan Drese, Rick VandenHurk and Nick Green. Riske also can seek a major league job, but he’s currently attending to a family matter in Las Vegas.
The Orioles informed Randy Winn that he won’t make the team, and he’s trying to latch on with another major league club.
Three or four more cuts could be made later today.
The Orioles could add a second left-hander, most likely Rapada, later in April once the rotation shakes out. Keep in mind that the Orioles are breaking camp with four starters.
The bullpen shapes up to include Gonzalez, Kevin Gregg, Koji Uehara, Jim Johnson, Jason Berken, Jeremy Accardo and Josh Rupe.
Brad Bergesen threw off a mound today without any problems. He could start April 3 or be assigned to the bullpen until making the April 10 start.
Brian Matusz will pitch an indoor simulated game today after his minor league game at Twin Lakes Park was rained out. The Orioles want him to get up six or seven times. He’ll “oppose” Justin Duchscherer, who is scheduled to throw two innings.
