Jakubauskas was chosen over Alfredo Simon, who threw 50 pitches in relief yesterday. The Orioles could have purchased Mitch Atkins’ contract from Triple-A Norfolk, since he would be working on normal rest.
Jakubauskas hasn’t started a major league game since April 2010 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He lasted only two-thirds of an inning before being hit in the head by a Lance Berkman line drive and missing the rest of the season.
In his last start at Norfolk, Jakubauskas allowed one run and six hits over seven innings May 26.
Luke Scott is available to pinch-hit tonight, and he told manager Buck Showalter that his shoulder feels better after he received a cortisone injection yesterday.
Derrek Lee will leave the team on Thursday to attend his grandfather’s funeral. The Orioles haven’t decided whether to place him on the bereavement list, which would require a three-day absence. Lee wants to return to the club in a shorter period of time.
