SARASOTA, Fla. - The Orioles had interest in Edwin Jackson over the winter, but they weren’t willing to give him more than a three-year deal.
They gave him quite a beating today.
Jackson allowed 10 runs (seven earned) and 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings, and the Orioles have built a 10-1 lead over the Nationals.
Jackson walked two, struck out four and threw 75 pitches.
Matt Wieters has singled twice, homered and driven in five runs. He began the day batting .129 with one homer and one RBI.
Only two of the five runs off Jackson were earned in the fourth inning. The Nationals have committed three errors.
Adam Jones also has three hits today, two of the infield variety, and has driven in a run.
Wilson Betemit has reached three times with two singles and a bases-loaded walk, and he’s driven in two runs.
Jake Arrieta retired 12 in a row before Steve Lombardozzi’s two-out single in the fifth. He’s allowed one run and four hits, walked one and struck out two over five innings.
Update: Nolan Reimold hit his first spring home run with one out in the fifth inning. Robert Andino followed with an infield hit, making him 3-for-3 today.
