Thome may receive second epidural, Patton ready to throw (Hammel update)

Orioles designated hitter Jim Thome will be examined by another doctor and may receive a second epidural injection because of lingering inflammation caused by a herniated disc in his neck.

Thome tried to swing a bat in Sarasota and still is experiencing some weakness and discomfort in his lat muscle. The Orioles aren’t viewing it as a major setback, but it’s disappointing news after he seemed to be progressing much faster than anticipated.

Left-hander Troy Patton could throw from a mound on Tuesday or Wednesday in his first bullpen session since going on the disabled list with a sprained right ankle.

Wilson Betemit is expected to rejoin the Orioles and take batting practice in the next day or two before going on an injury rehab assignment. He could join Double-A Bowie on Wednesday.

The Orioles want to get Betemit out of Florida before the storm hits.

Miguel Gonzalez is available in long relief tonight if he’s needed.

Manager Buck Showalter indicated that Jake Arrieta could pitch out of the bullpen if the right-hander is recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. Part of the decision would hinge on whether the Orioles needed him in the rotation.

“He’s real close to being in the form he needs to be to help us,” Showalter said.

Keep in mind that the Orioles need a starter for Wednesday and Thursday against the White Sox. Zach Britton could take one of those turns after pitching last night. Steve Johnson would be working on normal rest Thursday, which makes tonight’s start an important one for him.

Showalter will sit down with executive vice president Dan Duquette on Tuesday to discuss the call-ups and additions to the coaching staff. Players will be considered who can help the Orioles win. They won’t be brought up simply to “get their feet wet,” Showalter said.

A third catcher and another left-handed reliever are definite additions.

Jason Berken remains a candidate to come up as a reliever.

If you’re updating your wild card standings, the Athletics beat the Rays this afternoon, 4-2.
