Matusz not sharp as Orioles suffer first loss

After making progress over the offseason and making the team with a solid spring training, it was back to struggling for the Orioles tonight as the New York Yankees beat the O's 6-2 to drop the Orioles to 3-1 on the season.

Matusz struggled from the start, giving up a first-inning run and throwing 30 pitches in the inning. He went just four innings on a whopping 96 pitches and allowed six hits and four runs with four walks and one strikeout.

That is four times more earned runs that the O's starters had given over 22 innings during the series sweep of Minnesota.

Derek Jeter went 4-for-4 with a double and RBI and Andruw Jones hit a solo homer as the Yankees, who went 13-5 against Baltimore last season, picked up their first win after going 0-3 against Tampa.

Winning pitcher Ivan Nova gave up just 10 hits, but just two runs over seven innings throwing 92 pitches. Unlike Matusz, he did not walk a single batter in getting a win in his season debut after going 16-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 2011.

Matt Wieters hit a solo homer in the second and went 4-for-4 for the Orioles after beginning the year going 1-for-9.

In game two of this series tomorrow night, Wei-Yin Chen makes his Orioles debut pitching against New York's Freddy Garcia.
