The Nationals have another one of their minor league affiliates back in the fold, announcing today they have agreed to a new two-year contract with Double-A Harrisburg, extending the franchise’s 19-year affiliation with Harrisburg.
A few of you were asking over the last couple days if the Nationals were going to move their Double-A team to Richmond, where the San Francisco Giants currently have an affiliate. It never made much sense to do that, on the don’t-fix-what-isn’t-broken principle.
The Senators just renovated Metro Bank Stadium. Harrisburg is 2 1/2 hours from Washington, which is only a half-hour further than Richmond. I’m not sure what the Giants’ plans are for Richmond - it would make sense for them to find a Double-A affiliate closer to the West Coast - but there wasn’t much reason for the Nationals to leave Harrisburg.
Now, if there were a Triple-A team in Richmond, I’d think that would be a different story. But there’s not, so the Nationals will keep the status quo for their top two affiliates in 2011 and 2012.
