Flores making progress in rehab

Jesus Flores, who has missed the entire season while rehabbing his surgically repaired right shoulder, is making progress with the Nationals’ instructional league team in Viera, Fla. General manager Mike Rizzo said Flores is throwing to bases and hitting. He caught six innings yesterday and hit a homer in his first instructional league game.

“He’s full-go to do everything,” Rizzo said.

Flores has missed most of the last two seasons with injuries, and the Nationals traded for catcher Wilson Ramos in July. They plan to pair Ramos with Ivan Rodriguez next season, but Flores, who was seen as the Nationals’ solution at catcher as recently as last year, can still be a force in the majors, Rizzo believes.

“I see him as a full-time, everyday catcher,” Rizzo said. “I still see him as a front-line catching prospect. When he’s healthy, he’s proven that he can be an everyday catcher in the big leagues.”
